Dogs and Cats Friends or Enemies
cats and dogs
There is a running misconception about dogs and cats as being mortal enemies to each other. This has become a very popular notion especially because nowadays you can watch on television cartoons where a cat is always being chased by a dog.

What people probably do not know is that dogs and cats share similar characteristic traits where both of them are considered among the predator group of animals. This means that they are preying animals or looking to catch an inferior animal for food. By nature a dog or a cat get very much excited once they sense strange or sudden movements around them. This is the reason why some cats are wont to leap at any moving object, for instance a moving curtain that is being blown by the wind. They get excited by flying objects and swift moving tiny animals like rats which have become their favorite target for food.

Dogs, on the other hand have the preying instinct to catch animals that are smaller in size than themselves, also termed as the prey drive. So then people should always watch out and be careful even if their pet dogs are considered tame because their prey drive is just dormant.

In the meantime, kittens get their training in catching prey when they play around with moving objects, even chase their very own tail. When they grow older, their animal instinct takes over.

Meanwhile dogs are motivated to start a chase when cats disturb the dog’s peace. It would be very wise for the owners to protect these animals from hurting each other by practically putting them away from one another like separate areas in the house.

Nevertheless if you plan to have both the pet dog and pet cat together inside the house and at the same time expect them to coexist peacefully then you better do some good dog training for your pet. There are many ways to train a dog and perhaps the first thing that it has to learn is to get acquainted with a future friend in the house which is the cat.

You shouldn’t forget though that the animal instinct in the dog or the cat may come to play when any of these pets detect each others presence. A fight will of course ensue and expectedly a chase between the two pets will surely follow. There will be chaos all over the house because of this and the peace that you long for is abruptly shattered.

Therefore you better start the training of your pet dog before any untoward disaster occurs in your house. The next step in training the pet dog is to make it familiarize itself with the presence of another predator inside the house. You should be able to show appreciation for the dog’s behavior as it get used to having the cat around. You may give the dog a pat or a treat whenever it is able to ignore the taunting of the cat.

A single cat should never be mingled or brought together in the company of two or more dogs. Remember that there is always the danger that any of the dogs might want to play catch a prey with the cat. Distancing the dog and cat from one another should be brought to mind particularly during feeding time. Their animal instinct is for survival so they really get harsh when their food is being eyed by another animal.

The leave it command should be obeyed by the dog at all times especially when its preying instinct is triggered. You should treat both animals equally with kindness and reward them with their good behavior.

On the part of the owner, patience is required because of the limited means of communication with the pets. Instruction is usually made through body language and done over and over until the dog learns. The prize is worth your while anyways because you will attain a peaceful and harmonious coexistence with your pet dog and cat.

Top Dog Medicine for Healthy Bones and Joints
cats and dogs

For Fido’s bones and joints to be healthy, there are specific medicines that veterinarians recommend. We will give you some of the more common ones.

Note that not only anti-inflammatory medicine are available; supplements specifically for the joints and bones are also available. These are medicines that can be purchased only upon prescription.

Medicines

Deramaxx®

Deramaxx® are chewable tablets that fall under the anti-inflammatory category. When your dog is diagnosed with osteoarthritis or underwent orthopaedic surgery, he or she may feel pain and show signs of inflmmation. Your veterinarian may prescribe Deramaxx® chewable tablets. These tablets help control post-surgery pain. You should ask your veterinarian to explain what Deramaxx® will do for your dog and the likely consequences and side effects that you can expect from this particular medication.

How the medicine works to control pain varies from dog to dog, but it is important to follow your vet’s instructions; otherwise your dog may feel pain again. If your dog limps, has lost interest in his or her usual physical activities, or has difficulty in walking, then he or she may be suffering from osteoarthritis.

While Deramaxx® is not a cure for osteoarthritis, it will help control post-surgery pain and inflammation and help relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis. Your vet will not prescribe Deramaxx® if your dog has kidney problems, is vomiting, has blood in his stool or tends to dehydrate easily. Other disorders may also be present which your veterinarian will examine to decide if it is safe to administer Deramaxx®.

EtoGesic

Like Deramaxx®, EtoGesic is prescribed for dogs that have osteoarthritis or are suffering from post-surgery pain and inflammation. It is available in tablet form and should be administered as per your vet’s instructions. A dog will not be given EtoGesic if the following conditions are present:

facial swelling; allergy to aspirins; liver and kidney problems; hives; bleeding; and, certain other medical conditions.

Report any side effects from Etogesic to your veterinarian immediately.

    Metacam® Oral Suspension

Metacam® Oral Suspension is also a prescription NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug). It helps control pain and swelling (inflammation) in dogs diagnosed with osteoarthritis.

Dogs suffering from osteoarthritis usually have the following symptoms: limping or lameness, inability to engage in usual activities like climbing the stairs, standing up, and a generally decreased movement of the joints.

Metacam® is administered as an oral solution and dosage depends on the weight of the dog. The dosing must be accurate so as not to harm the dog. For small dogs, Metacam® must be given in droplet form to the dog’s food and not directly to the dog’s mouth. Your veterinarian should give you detailed instructions for giving Metacam® to your dog, with the correct use of the syringe and plunger.

Tell your vet if your dog has any health condition such as allergies, swelling, kidney or liver disorders and others. When you administer Metacam® to your dog, you will notice a marked improvement but again, the rate of improvement will vary from dog to dog.

    Previcox™

This top dog medicine also belongs to the NSAID category and is prescribed for osteoarthritis and other related inflammation and pain symptoms. The dose depends on the dog’s body weight and can be administered with or without food. As is customary with prescription medication, your veterinarian should explain potential side effects from Prevocox™ and will not prescribe it if your dog suffers from certain health conditions.

Other top medicines for healthy canine joints and bones are Zubryl tablets and Rimadyl® chewable tablets.

    Supplements

Some of the top supplements available to promote your pet’s healthy bones and joints are:

Adequan Canine® - it is used for intramuscular injection and is recommended for symptoms related to a kind of arthritis that causes trauma to synovial joints. This supplement should be prescribed only by a licensed veterinarian who will decide whether or not your dog can receive this supplement.

Dasuquin® - this supplement is a combination of glucosamine HCL and avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU). This HCL and ASU combination is said to protect the dog’s joint cartilage. It is in tea form and is rich in antioxidants. Ask your veterinarian if you can give your dog Dasuquin®.

Cosequin® Sprinkle Capsules – this is the ideal supplement for small dogs. It contains pure glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate and manganese ascorbate for healthy joints. Your veterinarian will prescribe this supplement for anywhere between four and six weeks. Your dog could respond to the supplement earlier than the six weeks at which time you can decrease the number of Cosequin® capsules you give him. The capsules can be split up and can be dropped on your dog’s food. Cosequin® Sprinkle Capsules are available in 90-capsule or 180-capsule bottles.

Pet Id Tags and the Law (uk) - a Must Read for Any Dog Owner in the UK
cats and dogs
Don’t end up with a £5,000 fine by getting it wrong, everyone should read this!

Many of us in the UK love to spoil our pets with various accessories like coats, jumpers, ‘doggles’ and even shoes! One of the most important things however that should not be neglected or forgotten is a Pet ID Tag.

Pet Identification not only makes sense (in case you pet gets lost) but also is a LEGAL requirement in the UK!

The law requires your to have your name, address (including postcode) and ideally phone number on the pet identification.

“The Control of Dogs Order 1992 mandates that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address (including postcode) of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag. Your telephone number is optional (but advisable).” [ref Kennel Club website]

If you don’t follow the law with this, you could risk a £5,000 fine!!

In our opinion, the BEST way to get your pet identification all wrapped up, is to take our 5 step plan…

Get your pet microchipped

Get yourself a quality engraved pet ID tag disc. Ideally ensure it’s a nice thick disc, with quality engraving (not cheap scratch engraving like you might find in help yourself pet shops). Add your name and address. And hopefully if space, phone number. Also if you can, add a line like “I am microchipped”.

Ensure the tag is attached to the collar with a high quality split ring. Don’t use one that has a cheap round metal attachment which will eventually bend and allow the tag to come loose from the collar!

Get an embroidered personalised dog collar with your name and phone number. This ensure that if for some reason the tag has come loose from the collar, or an old person who cant read the small engraving text, can still easily find your phone number from the large text embroidery on the collar!

Check the details are up to date at regular intervals, if you move, change name, or phone number then get your pet identification updated immediately.

Best Pet Collars sell personalised custom embroidered dog collars and have a fantastic range of pet ID tags which can be with you in less than a week from ordering.

Most Cats Detest Water And Will Avoid It At All Cost
cats and dogs
A lot of cats hate water because they know that they don’t belong in it, and it does not feel right on their skin. Cats don’t take baths because they clean themselves with their tongue to get their fur clean. They are scared to death of water, and they don’t like to go anywhere near it. They will scratch and bite you until you let them go. They will panic just by the sound of it. If you give them a bath it will be very hard to do because they will try to get out of the water, and they will use your skin as their ladder to get out. They don’t mean to hurt you. It’s just that they are scared.

They will pace around in the tub and meow at you to let them out of there. When they get out, they will not come near you after you clean them off because they will be very mad at you for what you have done to them. They will lick their fur for an hour to get it the way they want it to be or how they like it. But there are some cats that like the water and like to play in it. These cats will sit in the water and not move until you are done because they like the feel of it. Some cats will try to take a bath or a shower with you. They like to walk around the tub and play in the water because of the bubbles or if there is something in the water.

You have to give them a bath every week to keep the fleas out of their fur and to help them stay clean. If you give a cat a bath at a young age they will learn to love water because they will be used to it. Some cats will even go in the pool with you to go swimming, but it is best to put a life jacket on them so they can float and have fun with you. Sometimes cats will think they are dogs because they like the water and they can swim in it. Watch your cat around you when you take an oil bath because if they get in it or fall in it, their fur will stick straight up, and they will look like a fur ball. The oil that came from the bath will stay in their fur for a while, and it will look funny to see them like that. It will go down in time. It just takes a few days or weeks.

Vaccinations for Cats
cats and dogs
The debate on giving annual vaccinations to ensure good cat health versus the unhealthy implications of inoculation on the pet health has been going on for years. Many veterinarians believe that there is enough evidence to suggest that annual vaccine shots for deadly diseases such as rabies, distemper, and parvovirus, is unnecessary and even harmful in some cases.

There is no doubt vaccinations (immunizations, \”shots\”) have saved the lives of millions of cats. Before the days of effective vaccines, cats routinely died from panleukopenia (\”feline distemper\”) and complications of upper respiratory (herpesvirus, calicivirus) infections. Newer vaccines are available to protect against feline leukemia virus infection, feline infectious peritonitis virus and other infections (chlamydia, feline bordetella, ringworm). Current vaccination programs protect our cats (and us) from the threat of rabies.

Cat health related vaccines that have been licensed by the federal government are tested to make sure that they protect pet health against diseases for one year. But, because these vaccines are not tested for long-term pet health side effects nor do they measure the time for which the vaccine will be effective, some studies at universities have suggested that cat health can be protected by these vaccines for many years negating the requirement of annual shots. This also means that pet owners don’t have to waste money on annual inoculations for better pet health and cat health.

What Studies Tell About Pet Health Vaccines

Typically, rabies is the only pet health disease that can pose a threat to people; most vaccines aren’t statutory by law. However, vets recommend annual boosters to guard cat health against those potential diseases that can be life threatening (parvovirus in dogs, distemper, herpes in cats etc). In advent of this new and scientific data that cites annual booster shots leading to certain health risks such as hyperthyroidism in cats, more and more vets are now making changes in their practices. According to a poll, it has been found that the vaccination count has fallen down by 49% than the figure 5 years ago.

It’s safe to assume that no one, including vets, scientists etc, knows the duration of protection cat health vaccines offer. Moreover, vaccine makers don’t wish to spend millions of pounds on proving the duration of their vaccines nor do they wish to test it.

Health Problems Related to Cat Health Vaccines

More studies, off late, are beginning to link many chronic pet health problems to inoculations. Cat health skin related problems such as hair loss, ulcers, lesions, indurations and serious problems such as indurations or hard lumps at and around the site of the injection have often been related to vaccines. While these adverse reactions to pet health vaccines may not pose the threat of an epidemic, it definitely rings an alarm bell and warrants a re-examination of the conventional beliefs related to vaccination practices.

Adverse Reactions to Pet Health Vaccines

Adverse reactions to pet health vaccines include fever, stiffness of joints, lethargy, abdominal tenderness, anaphylactic shock, kidney and liver problems among others. In some cases, vets believe that those cats/dogs that have a pre-existing health problem may suffer a much faster decline in their health when given annual booster shots.

Top Medication for Dogs
cats and dogs
Keeping your furry friend healthy is easier if you understand and know about the medications and preparations that are most often prescribed by veterinarians. Many of the most commonly prescribed dog medications are preventatives. Others are meant for treating common conditions that affect dogs and their health. Take a look at some of the top medications that can help keep your dog healthy and playful throughout his life.

Heartworm can kill your dog. The parasites are carried by mosquitoes, and can infect the heart and permanently damage it. Heartworm prevention is one of the most important things you can do for your dog’s health.

Heartgard Plus Chewables for Dogs is a once a month heartworm treatment that will protect your dog and keep him or her safe from the dangers of heartworm. It will also treat and control hookworms and roundworms for up to a month. Anyone who has tried to worm a dog on a regular basis will appreciate the ease of having the task of prevention reduced to giving the animal a single tablet once a month during heartworm season. The Heartguard tablet is specially formulated to be palatable to most dogs, so there’s no fighting to get a nasty tasting pill into your dog’s mouth and holding his jaws closed until he swallows.

Osteoarthritis is a common ailment in older canines caused by a lifetime of wear and tear on the cartilage in the joints. The stiffness and soreness can seriously affect your once playful pet, making it difficult for them to get to their feet and painful for them to move, run, play and climb stairs. There is no cure for osteoarthritis, but there are medications that can make your pup’s life less painful and restore his quality of life.

Cosequin is a nutritional supplement that promotes joint health and may prevent or delay the onset of osteoarthritis. It is formulated with high quality chondroitin and glucosamine, essential amino acids that are found in health joint fluid. Cosequin has been proven to maintain joint health in controlled, published studies. The all natural supplement can be used to improve joint health in dogs that already have compromised joint function, or given as a nutritional supplement to protect joints before damage happens.

Rimadyl Chewable Tablets are one of the most commonly prescribed anti-inflammatory and pain relievers for dogs. The NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) reduces inflammation and pain due to osteoarthritis. It is also commonly prescribed by veterinarians to reduce pain and soreness after surgery. Rimadyl tablets are designed to taste good to dogs, so you won’t have to fight to get it into your pet, making it easier to give the tablets according to your veterinarian’s directions.

Diarrhea is not unusual in dogs, but it can be a concern and can also cause further problems. Diarrhea can be caused by emotional stress like a move or boarding in a kennel, by illness or antibiotics given to treat another illness or by eating inappropriate foods. One of the dangers of diarrhea is a resulting imbalance of intestinal bacteria that can create other infections and illnesses.

Fortiflora is a natural supplement made by Purina for dogs with diarrhea. It contains a probiotic that encourages the growth of healthy, needed bacteria in your dog’s intestinal tract. The live active cultures promote a healthy balance of intestinal flora in your dog, and promote a healthy immune system. It also contains high levels of vitamin A, E and C to promote overall health and well being. Fleas, lice and ticks are one of the perennial problems faced by any pet owner. These dangerous critters are more than just an annoyance, though. All three can transmit serious diseases to your pet, and can be responsible for allergic dermatitis that makes your dog miserable. Flea infestations can be impossible to eradicate, and can affect your entire family, while various types of ticks can transmit Lyme disease and other serious illnesses that can affect your dog’s heart and other organs. Battling fleas can be a major undertaking for a dog owner, but there are medications that make it far easier.

Frontline Plus is a topical treatment that kills fleas, ticks, lice and their larva and eggs, and prevents reinfestation for up to a month. The topical treatment collects in the hair follicles and is released throughout the month to kill fleas, larva and eggs within minutes, and prevent fleas from reinfesting your dog’s coat for thirty days. It also kills all stages of ticks, including deer ticks, which carry Lyme disease, before they can transmit the disease.

Simple Steps To Building Your Dog’s New House
cats and dogs
More than half of the population allows their dogs to stay inside their houses sleeping on the couch or their owner’s bed. Others prefer their dogs stay outside in dog houses. If you would like to build a dog house for your pet the following tips should help you get started.

1. Consider your dog’s size. Dog houses should have adequate space for the animal to comfortably move around. People like to have approximately 2 feet of air above them and there is a good chance dogs also enjoy having about that much space as well. Dogs and people tend to need about 1/3 of their standing height to feel comfortable. To calculate how much space will be needed for your dog’s house you should measure your dog while he is standing straight up, sitting, and most importantly measure his full length when he is most relaxed and outstretched. Keep in mind that your dog should be able to see out of the entrance while both sitting and standing. The entrance needs to be high enough that the dog does not have to hunch down or scrape his stomach on the bottom.

2. Water and air should be able to flow under the dog house. Therefore be sure to raise it a couple inches off the ground. It is also important to make sure the dog’s house has adequate ventilation. This will help keep pests from making the dog house their home. This can be accomplished using a few small holes around the eaves. By installing a wind block inside the dog’s house, he or she will be able to use its own heat to warm the area when it is really cold outside. For additional protection against the elements you might consider adding a partial wall separating the entry room from the inner room. A soft pillow and warm bedding will also likely be much appreciated.

3. To keep the rain out of the dog’s house make the floor slanted a little toward the doorway. The roof on the other hand should be slanted in the other direction. Dog houses should also be well insulated.

4. It is not a good idea to build your dog’s house so that it faces the South or the West because most storms come from these directions in the United States. Dog houses should typically face East. This will also help keep cold air from blowing through past the entryway.

5. Your dog will appreciate a clean house. In order to make cleaning the Dog’s house easier try putting hinges on the roof.

If your dog lives outdoors he or she will appreciate a comfortable place to sleep and to get out of the cold. These tips should help you get started building your dog’s new house.
