While cats can be afflicted by several types of worms, ringworm in fact is a fungal infection, not a worm. Ringworm is a fungus that can affect cats, dogs, and humans. Temperatures that high could kill your animal. If you must leave a pet unattended in your vehicle park it in the shade, put the windows down and be sure to have water that your pet can drink. Pets with flat faces and/or thick fur are at the highest risk for heat stroke. Try to take your pet out in the cool of the morning or early evening to keep it from overheating. The daytime hours can be too much for your animal.

It is also a good idea to keep track of how the sun shines in your yard. A place that is shaded at one time may be bright in another because of how the sun moves across the sky. Be sure that your dog or cat is resting in the shade as much as possible while outside. At the least make sure that shade is available at all times so that your pet can find relief from the sun. They will know when they are too hot, at least most of the time, be sure to give them ample opportunities to find relief. Excessive panting is one of the earliest signs of heat exhaustion, but if symptoms get to the point of vomiting be sure to get your animal cooled down. One sure fire way to do this is to pour cool water on the dog or cat and work the liquid into its coat. If this does not help, and the animal ends up losing consciousness you should take it to a veterinarian immediately.

Dogs require a lot of attention and care. You have to walk them daily and you must make sure they are housebroken. Cats do not require you to walk them. How often have you seen a cat on a leash? Cats use litter boxes – even though they need minimal training in this aspect - you do not have to provide them with access to the outdoors for daily “bathroom” breaks. You do have to take into account that those litter boxes have to be cleaned often and also the expense and weight of the litter itself. I have had to drag 25 pounds of litter on many occasions up a flight of stairs – the older I get the harder this becomes.

Dogs respond easily to commands – even some amateur trainers can teach them the basics, sit, stay, and come. They seem to naturally know how to fetch and once you start this game with them they never stop. Cats on the other hand do very few tricks, although my brother has a cat that fetches – there are always exceptions to the rules. Mostly, they do what they want when they feel like it. Yes, cats are very independent and do not follow commands. They like to hide and roam at will. You heard the saying “finicky cat” they are extremely finicky – with people, food, and behavior.

If you leave home for even a day, you must make sure that someone can feed and walk your dog. If you leave your cat alone for a day with food, water, and a litter box - he should do fine. As a matter of fact, when I first adopted my cat I did not see him for a couple of days – they are not very social creatures especially with strangers. I had a friend check on my cat when I went away for a week long vacation. My friend cleaned the litter box, refilled the food and water bowls and never saw my cat. Just as you should consider your personality type when selecting a breed, you should also consider your lifestyle when choosing between a cat and a dog.

They can be playful when they want to be. They can also be full of personality, good or bad. Cat lovers love this about their animals. They are themselves. Of course, they can be rather snooty to some. They are independent and they certainly won’t greet you unless it is in their best interest to do so.

Animals as pets, seems a silly notion to me. The only animals I’ve really kept as pets would be fish. And many animal lovers who have pets, would probably disagree with me as to the classification of fish as pets. Whatever. While I enjoy other peoples animal pets, I’m sure none of them would classify me as an animal lover. A recent turn of events may however have a long term effect on my relationship with animals. Having recently caved to our children’s long term lobbying efforts to have a family dog as a pet, it appears that I will be sharing my home with an animal of the non-aquatic variety very soon.

Stress Out The Dogs

The thought of sharing my domicile with an animal has me a little stressed out. However, that should be short lived, as according to many experts living with an animal is supposed to help relieve stress in humans. Not exactly sure why that is. Perhaps having a creature you can speak your mind to, that has no recourse but to agree with you? Sometimes us human animals just need someone to listen, and agree with everything we say. Maybe the constant reminder of an animal who has no control over what they eat, where they sleep, how they play, and what goofy clothes they wear, makes people realize that maybe things aren’t so bad for them. Could be worse, you could be a dog.

Apparently exercise is supposed to be another benefit of keeping an animal in the house. Taking them out for walks, playing catch, and bending over to pick up dogie poo all seem wonderful. Really? I tend to like my exercise to be more of the competitive variety. Any chance rover can learn to pick up a tennis racquet? Animals playing sports? Now that’s got potential.

Need to find some new friends? Get an animal. Your guaranteed to meet other animal lovers, as they all walk their dogs / cats / hamsters through the park. Not so sure these are the best kind of people for me to meet though. Never have been much of an animal lover, so I’m not to sure how I’d fit in with this group. Those people with the big nasty attack dogs always scare me a little. It’s not so much the animal I worry about however, it’s really the owners that concern me. What would posses someone to want to own an animal that could kill you while you sleep is truly beyond me.

Apparently animals make great therapists. Hmm, maybe they meant animals are good therapy. That whole unconditional love and admiration thing. Not like the animals have much choice. Seems like a pretty one sided relationship to me. Well hopefully all the animal experts are right and there is some good (therapeutic or otherwise) to living with animals. I hope so, otherwise I may soon be the one in need of a therapist. Preferably a human one.
