Choose the Right Pet. Cat, Dog or Something Else
cats and dogs
Choosing to bring a new pet into your home is never an easy fact. It’s not all about it’s price or type, but also it brings some new responsibilities to you - you have to take care of him.

First, you must ask yourself some serious questions: Why do you want to adopt a pet? Do you have time for a pet? Can you have a pet where you live? Can you afford a pet? Are you going to move soon? Do you have the right home for the pet you want? Are your children old enough for a pet? Do you have the financial resources for a pet at this time? Are you able to deal with any special problems that might come up with your new pet?

You must answer careful to these questions before choosing a pet.

When you think to get a new pet you think what type it should be. Well, the most common pets are cats and dogs. Some statistics shows that there are approximately 90 million owned cats and 73 million owned dogs just in the United States.

There seems to be more cats than dogs owned as pets. The main reason may be that cats are more easy to take care of than dogs. Cats are also more funny than any other pet. They have an amusing curiosity when you play with them. Every cat is a true individual. So it’s important to take the time to choose a four-footed friend who’s right for you. A cat’s personality, age, and appearance are all things you should keep in mind when making your selection.

But the fact is why you want a pet? For companion, entertainment or protection? If you need protection, of course you will choose a well trained dog as a pet, while, if you need some entertainment you’ll choose a cat. You should know until now that cats are the most funny pets.

But there is not only about cats and dogs. You may want an exotic pet like parrots, canaries (if you like to hear them singing),turtles, lizards, and other pets like fish, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, rabbits, ponies or spiders.

If you want to impress your friends, you may choose an unusual pet like a spider or lizard. These pets must be kept in their own cages and you have to be very careful with them.

There are many places where you can get a pet. Pet shelters are the best idea, but you can adopt a pet from your friends or neighbors too.

If you want a real breed pet, you may choose to buy one, but you’ll see that many prices are around $500 to $1600. The easy way to get a pet is to adopt one. You can find them at animal shelters or rescue, or perhaps even a neighbor or friend.

Take care that owning a pet rise some important responsibilities for you.

1. You must feed him. There are many pet stores from where you can buy food for your pet. Some pets, like rabbits need vegetables and you have to provide them.

2. You must care of his health. Take your pet for regular check-ups from your local vet, and ensure you provide the required vaccination for him.

3. Keep a clean, fresh environment for you pet. It is necessary for your pet health. That’s obvious.

4. Take some time for your pet. You must take some time to play or just walk around with your pet. It’s very important for your new pet.

Things to consider before adopting a pet: how much space will be available for him, your expenses with him (food, care, vets etc), the time you will spend with your pet (the most important) and will he meet other pets of his kind? Good luck choosing a good pet.

Rabbits: a Cat-alternative
cats and dogs
Thinking about getting a pet? There’s one furry companion you probably haven’t considered, but should. It’s smart, uses a litter box, can learn to come and walk on a leash, is at home anywhere from a big house with yard to a college dorm room, and it probably won’t make you sneeze. What’s this terrific alternative to a dog, cat and hamster? A rabbit.

Rabbits are funny and charming – and they need you as much as you need them. Like dogs and cats, rabbits are abandoned every day. The United States Humane Society reports that 3 million to 4 million — yes, million — rabbits are euthanized in shelters each year. By adopting a bunny, you not only get a terrific companion, you save a life.

What’s so special about bunnies?

Rabbits are quiet, smart and will play with toys.

They’re cute. Watching them eat a carrot or just wash their big ears will put a smile on anyone’s face.

Far fewer people have allergies to rabbits than other furry pets, and you can find some breeds that barely shed.

They’re clean, as animals go. Once they’ve learned to use a litter box, they can roam around your house like any other pet. Plus, their droppings are virtually odor-free and are considered cold compost, meaning you can toss them directly into the garden with great results.

They are social animals. They’re happiest and healthiest when they have another rabbit to play with. They also like to snuggle with people, so you can plan to spend time holding, petting and playing with them each day.

There are more than 40 different types of rabbits to choose from. (For more information on them, go to http://www.arba.net/photo.htm).

Who should get a rabbit?

Bunnies are especially good pets for people who live in apartments because they’re quiet, don’t need to be walked and can be litter trained. Most apartments and dormitories allow rabbits because they are considered "caged" pets.

Rabbits — especially if they have another bunny for company — are ideal for people who work long hours or take weekend trips. They do fine for a day if you leave plenty of timothy hay, rabbit feed, veggies and water.

They are great starter pets for school-age children (the recommended starting age is 8, but it depends on your child). Just be sure the bunnies aren’t too big for your kids to handle properly. And since rabbits live about 10 years, be sure you’re prepared to care for them, like you would dogs or cats, if your children don’t. The organization where you get your rabbits can help you find the best match.

If you are unsure about a rabbit as a pet, seek out a local rescue organization and become a foster. Most rescues will pay for all supplies and food — and all pay for veterinary care — until a permanent home is found. This is a wonderful way to save some bunnies’ lives, decide if you’re a rabbit person and find the perfect one for you.

How do you choose?

Rabbits’ personalities change greatly when they go into adolescence. Some love toys, others like to romp in the tall grass. Getting a rabbit that’s at least 6 months old will help guarantee that the bunny you adopt will act the same way a year from now. If you adopt from a rescue organization, the foster parent can give you information on the bunny’s likes, fears and quirks.

If you’ve got a dog, consider up front how it will respond to a new pet in your home. Many dogs learn to get along with rabbits; some befriend them; some see them as prey. If a rabbit will be safe in your home, choose one that’s the right size to interact with your other pets.

Rabbits have a variety of personalities. Like cats, some rabbits will play hard to get; some will sit on your lap and let you pet them as long as you like. Find a bunny that suits your style.

Reputable rabbit rescue organizations will insist that your rabbits be spayed or neutered, for their health and your happiness. Most rescues factor that into the adoption fee.

How do you care for bunnies?

Rabbits need attention, fresh water and food (timothy hay, rabbit chow and vegetables) every day.

Their litter boxes must be changed at least weekly.

Rabbits need a cozy space to call home, but they don’t require much stuff. An extra-large wire dog crate, water bottle, heavy food bowl, litter box with recycled paper litter, a box with shredded paper to dig in, and a few hard infant or cat toys will keep them happy.

To keep your bunnies healthy in a wire-bottom cage, put old carpet scraps on the bottom. Without that protection, they’ll develop painful and debilitating arthritis in their toes. While you’re at it, add a 12- by 12-inch ceramic tile for him to lie on to cool off. You can often get these for free from a local flooring store.

Unlike dogs and cats, rabbits take a few weeks to warm up to new people and surroundings. At first they will hop a few feet out of and then back into their cage, then they’ll gradually start to explore. They’ll relax once they become comfortable with their environment. Although they love to hop around the house, rabbits need a safe place — a covered box or small covered doggie bed – where they can go when they need time alone.

Bunnies don’t see in color, so they often mistake wires for weeds and chew on them. You can easily bunny-proof your home by tacking wires up out of their reach.

House rabbits have difficulty cooling off above 85 degrees and staying warm below 40 degrees, so you’ll need to use caution when you take them outside in the summer or winter.

My bunny’s home. Now what?

Enjoy! You won’t be able to resist:

– Watching carrot juice drip from your baby bunny’s chin after an especially good carrot.

– The first time bunny grooms you (to show you are his).

– The times when she jumps with glee and spins around in mid-air.

– Watching bun sleep peacefully on his back, legs straight up in the air

Pet Animals - Dogs or Cats?
PETS AND ANIMALS
Most of us like to have pets at home, especially kids who get excited about the idea of having a pet at home. There are some pretty common pets that are usually seen in most houses and they are dogs, cats, rabbits etc. Dogs are preferred because they guard their master, and the house, and will never tolerate anyone misbehaving with their master. But if people are interested in having companions for them, they prefer cats, as they prove to be very good companions. There are some differences in the nature and habits of dogs and cats, and so it becomes quite personal as to what you are looking for in a pet.

The first difference that is seen in the dogs and cats is that dogs are social animals and like to live in groups. They like to follow the leader of the group and are termed as the happiest among all in this kind of environment. Cats are completely different by nature and they like to roam about alone and never like to follow anyone. Dogs can stay anywhere they go and will become happy after sometime but the cats will not feel happy if they are taken out of their environment even if they have the best of companions with them.

The eating habits of dogs and cats are different and it is easy to manage with the dogs as compared to the cats in many aspects. When it comes to food, dogs will eat almost anything and can survive without meat for few days. Although dogs need a good amount of meat protein to maintain their health but at times they can manage without meat. But cats need a fixed amount of meat protein daily and are not able to maintain good health without it. Dogs can also remain without eating for few days by utilizing the fat reserves of their body but even if the cat is overweight it cannot utilize its fat reserves and needs to be fed daily. In the absence of proper feeding their health deteriorates.

Dogs are very obedient and will follow your instructions in any circumstances and when it rolls over it shows its submissive nature. But when the cat rolls over it shows the sign of trust because cats are never submissive. Dogs like to roll on dirty things like the normal nature of the dogs that are seen in the street dogs. Whereas cats have the nature of digging the earth and then bury their waste in it so that no one can trace them. Both of them have their peculiar nature just because of the cause of survival, which is the most important point for all the species in this world.

Keeping in mind all the points of differences between a cat and a dog, now it is up to you what you decide. Some like cats because of their nature and habits and some prefer dogs for their obedience and guarding nature.

But probably the thing that attracts people to dogs as pets, the most is that dogs are loyal, after all they are often referred to, - ‘as a man’s best friend’. Irrespecitve of these things, it’s basically a personal choice and both, dogs and cats both are kept as pets in homes.

Tips for Keeping Pets
PETS AND ANIMALS
Animals unlike humans cannot express their feelings and they cannot go on making demands and tell their owners when they need food. They are animals. Pet keepers bring home fish, cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters and birds home all the time eagerly but sadly, they fail to take proper care of their pets because of which their animals die. If pets can not speak out, pet keepers themselves should be humane enough to understand their pets heartily and give them their rights.

Some basic and simple tips for pet keepers can ensure a healthy and loving relation between themselves and their pets. As far as dogs are concerned it is advisable to keep it in a proper dog house which should be comfortable and cozy enough for it to reside in. Whenever you take out your dog for a walk make sure you leash it. They are playful animals, they love to jump and mingle with other animals and chase things. So avoid any bad circumstances it is always better to play it safe. Cats are well mannered and they are less messy than dogs. However they too need proper care. Dogs and cats should be bathed regularly and their utensils cleaned on daily bases. If your dog or cat ever urinate or excrete in your lounge, you should never leave it unclean. It is highly unhygienic for animals and pet keepers both.

The animals that you keep in cages need a little more attention. They are enslaved so it is better to make them at least feel free. Birds or rabbits should never be kept in small cages. They should be big enough so that your birds can easily flutter their wings and fly about. It should be big enough so that your rabbit can run about and hide when it wants to hide. Animals kept at home should provide them with a sense of being in their natural habitats. This way they feel free and they live happily. Their cages, their beddings should be cleansed thoroughly and regularly.

Animals should be vaccinated whenever they need to be. They should be taken for regular medical checkups so that they stay health and energetic. Animals too should be kept in a secured area and never be left out on their own. Pets are unlike the stray animals; they are vulnerable and require special attention. So pet keepers should make sure they take care of their pets the way they should be kept. They can always keep themselves updated through internet and magazines to acknowledge and fulfill their pet’s needs.
